So it goes something like this. A few years back I had a personal blog on a now defunct blogging platform. I discussed anything and everything, especially things I noticed on a daily basis. I talked about my cat and the weather. But never, anywhere in this blog did I mention “rainbow poop.” Ever. So why then was that my number #1 ranking keyword?!
Keyword Research
I admit I never did keyword research on that blog…I didn’t even know what the heck it was. I didn’t really care either, I just wanted to write and throw in some humor for good measure.
It wasn’t until I decided to get serious about blogging and teaching people tips and tricks, that I discovered keywords and how to pick them. It’s definitely a process and it most certainly is a must (in my opinion) for you to take your blog/site to the next level.
I try to do things with ease as most of you know. I don’t like things complicated, mainly because I get a strong desire to put my head through the monitor for lack of understanding. 🙂
So, after realizing that I could not escape from keyword research, I went out to the top of the mountain and figure out what I needed. I had to learn first that if I didn’t optimize my keywords, meaning, make them search engine friendly, I was not going to move up.
Example for you of optimizing a keyword. Your chosen keyword is, oh let’s go with, oh! How about rainbow poop???? Okay, so you pick a keyword of “rainbow.” As of this writing, searching rainbow in Google returns 163,000,000 results. Uhm, you’re good but not that good! How will you get to #1 spot with all that competition?
Now, you drill down your choices. A good tool for this is the Google Wonder Wheel. I won’t get all into that here, entirely different post…you can click the link above and check it out. Here is an image of what it looks like for you though.
Pretty simple. Anyways, now you have chosen the keyword you want, “rainbow poop”. 14, 900 results. Excuse me, but why are so many people searching for that?! As you can see, a much more manageable number for you to dominate.
The best thing I ever did was utilize a keyword research tool to help me. This way I can do research right from my dashboard as I write my headlines. And because I am easily tech challenged, this tool is color coded for me 🙂 I use Keyword Winner for its simplicity. (Affiliate link.)
You can determine for yourself if you think it’s easy, but anything that shows me low competition keywords, suggestions, trends and implements SEO tools…works for me. So far I have at least ranked on the first page of Google for one of my primary phrases thanks to my KW plug in.
The Internet Lifestyle
Now back to my old personal blog I used to have. I was on a blogging platform that paid you to blog. And they had their own analytics in your dash. So that is how I knew I ranked for rainbow poop. Sure enough, I Google the term and there I was, front and center, number one for rainbow poop.
I don’t know how that really happened, but it allowed me to live the Internet lifestyle. Oh yes, I made .05 cents a week my friends. See, it can be done. You too, with hard work and dedication, and a little rainbow poop can live the luxury lifestyle of the Internet. Had I ranked for a second amazing keyword, I would have bumped to the next tier and made .08 cents a week. The stress of all that cash was too much. 🙂
What I am trying to get at here is that junk keywords are not going to help you rank, make money or get readers. If your blog is your business, then you need to research. This includes topics, your readers needs, list building and keywords.
The Bottom Line
I don’t want to make the same mistake with this blog that I did with the old personal one. I want to know why things rank or how something I implement affects my readers/traffic/serps.
That’s why I use tools to help me, most of them free…because I’m trying to save all that cash I made before. 🙂 The best thing I did for my blog to help with search, was learn about keywords. If you need to do keyword research and you feel like you need an easy, efficient way to do so, then take a look at the KW plug in I use in this video below. After the 1:00 minute vid, check it out here.
How bout it? Have you ever ranked for some goofy keyword??

I left a comment at BlogEngage, but I just couldn’t resist leaving a comment here, too. I suspect that you will once again rule the SERPs for “rainbow poop”. I can’t wait to see who comes along now to write a post on “rainbow pooper scooper”.
PooperScooper!! Hmmmm…*runs off to write*…excellent idea! Thanks for stopping by here as well David!
Keyword Analysis is the most important element for your website. When you start website promotion. You want some powerful keywords for your website/blog so Google launched the link wheel tool for researching keywords and analysis it.
I am so thrilled that I happen to have found your blog today! Love it!

Hi Kazia:
Welcome to my blog and I appreciate your feedback. Keyword research is so important and it baffles me still when I learn people are not doing it!!
kindred spirits are a necessity out here so it’s a real pleasure to meet you!! 🙂

Personal blogs are great for weird search terms my top being ‘marinaded lesbian’ – the mind boggles at what the searcher was looking for – maybe just a night in cooking with the gals.
I think the mistake a lot of people make is once they’ve got a set of keywords they tend to write short, quick posts on the subject, (like around 80% of the posts in free articles directories), when it is probably better to mull it over for a couple of days and write a much long article, which gives the possibility of you being found by someone using a combination of the keyword and another word you hadn’t thought of – so this article is a good example as it combines some personal experience with the basic facts.
marinaded lesbian huh??! WOW, in the mind of the people is a scary place!
It sounds interesting you reach the top rank on Google without keyword research tool. The procedure you specify to get high rank keyword phrase I will try it and give you feed back about it.
Welcome and good luck!! 🙂
Lisa
Hi Lisa,
You crack me up! And I see you’re really killin’ it with AdSense. .05 a week. lol
I wish I’d really learned about SEO and keywords in the beginning. It would have been a lot easier to work with it on an ongoing basis rather than try to add after the fact (to several sites with lots of pages). Groan.
I would love to know the difference in income of a monetized blog in position #1 and one in position #10. Just curious.
Thanks for the info on the Keyword Winner.
Peggy
Hi Peggy:
I think there is a huge difference between those two spots! We all should be rock stars and get our butts there! 🙂
If you have any questions about Keyword Winner, dont hesitate to ask!
Lisa
Lisa, aloha. Saw your post over on Dino’s and now I understand. Love your rainbow poop. Can only imagine past exchanges between you too. Look forward to reading more. Aloha. Janet
Hi Janet:
Welcome to rainbow poop palace!! 🙂 Not really, but it sounded good.
Dino is a very funny boy and yes, there have been some supreme exchanges between the two of us. That, or I walk into one of his exchanges elsewhere and I just HAVE to see what it’s all about.
Appreciate you stopping by and look forward to seeing you again!
Lisa
Lisa,
I was taught to do keyword research before anything else. And I do it every time. Even for weird blog titles that I love and have nothing to do with my subject. So glad I learned this lesson from the get go.
Now my searches are quick and easy. It is one of those things that the more you do it the easier it gets.
100% agree with you Sheila! Would have saved me a lot of work had I known that from the beginning!
Cheers,
Lisa
I was trying to rank for Rainbow Poop forever now…I cant believe you beat me without even trying :-p
LOL Dino! I figured you were running the market on that one!! 🙂
Hi Lisa,
Great post! Keyword research has been one of my biggest headaches for a number of reasons. I do use keyword research for all my posts but sometimes I write a post that really has no value in terms of searches but I write it anyway because it’s something that I find useful. Luckily my URL is optimized and I rank on page two with no effort. I guess a little more effort then will bump me up to page one. 🙂
I’m going to look into the tools you suggested here, I’ve tried a free version of Market Samurai and it’s great but not sure if it’s worth all the money.
Thanks for the informative post as always!
-Gabi
Hi Gabi and thanks for your feedback! You definitely have a step up with your URL keywords. What I like about Keyword Winner is that it;s right in your dashboard…so as you type it returns the competitive keywords for you.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Lisa
Lisa,
I see right through you. Trying to corner that lucrative “rainbow Poop” market again with this post huh! get rolling with your .05 cents a week. heck with your own google adsence it could even be .08 cents without a second term! LOL
Anyhow very funny and well thought out article. I was actually captivated. I think most of us rank for some unexpected keywords. Just not as cool as “rainbow poop”.
Makes me wonder what poops rainbows? Leprechauns? Unicorns? The mind boggles.
Thanks for an informative and amusing article. And of course thinks for the link. 🙂
Hi steve:
you found me out!!! Now I need to get ready for my riches. 🙂
It’s a pleasure to link to such a plethora of knowledge from you!
Lisa
Hi Lisa
I have learnt from the best about the importance of keywords over with Alex Whalley, my fellow Aussie and unofficial mentor 😉
Like you, didn’t pay much attention as I was ranking without too much trouble in my small niche. Then is was shown me I should start ranking for other keywords so that’s when it got interesting lol
I guess better late than never; me deciding to join the party eh?! And I love your rainbow poop story. Too funny LOL
Patricia Perth Australia
Hi Patricia:
Im glad to make you smile! 🙂 Alex is a genius I must say. And always….better late than never! Always forging ahead and making improvements is how I have to look at things in this business!!
Cheers,
Lisa
Hi Lisa
That wonder wheel is awesome.
I set up my blog categories after using it.
I put in Public Speaking then looked for the sub groups of Public Speaking and voila… those were my blog categories.
I was waiting for some talking in the video!
No talking but I enjoyed the music. LOL
I could probably guessed what they would be but it’s nice to have it confirmed.
Keith, I love the wonder wheel I really do! I totally utilize that with my plug in and I get the right competition keywords!!
Glad you liked the wonder wheel too! 🙂
Lisa
BTW, just came back from your site and your categories look great!
Lisa,
I haven’t really put my focus on “keywords” (not yet) but I think that’s what I need to do now. I don’t have much authority online on my niche just yet. Majority of my traffic is coming from Google search. Definitely, I need to do some work on keyword optimization.
Thanks again for this tip!
Hi Marlon:
It really is crucial to stepping up our game. Google search results is a good start my friend! This plug in really did help me put my own keywords into perspective. I don;t try to go for the out of reach keywords anymore!! 🙂
Let me know if I can help in anyway!
Lisa
Hi Lisa,
I use Scribe SEO and some other tools, but I have a unique kind of blog, in that the content has little or nothing to do with what I’m selling. The keywords I use have to be for two different types of searches. I take comfort in the thought that keywords aren’t the most important part in search engine optimization.
Lou Barba
Hi Lou:
I agree to an extent. Consider the fact that optimizing either “topic” you focus on could bring in more visitors and eyeballs on both sides of the coin. Maybe a sort of cross-functional keywording! (I just made that up)
You have great gift baskets featured on your site…couple that with your FANTASTIC writing and ka-pow!
Lisa
Had to hit the Google Analytics too check on this one Lisa. A while back on my freelancing site I wrote a post titled “Dogs Are People Too.” By the magic of Google I get hits on that post with those exact words going into the search box.
A hidden niche perhaps? Maybe. Maybe not 😛
Amazing how this all works Robert. Yes, I think maybe you have stumbled onto something. 🙂
The human dog + rainbow poop = the next Twitter! 🙂 I think we’re rock stars!
Lisa
Thanks Lisa. I have done keyword search, but I can admit I don’t do it every time. It’s post like these that make keep me on top of my game.
I hope it helps! I used to skip keyword research every now and again, but realized the implication of that. Writing in the dark and not focusing on what readers are actually searching for!
Thanks for stopping by Allan
Lisa
One word of warning for anyone signing up for Google Wonder Wheel….do not get one letter wrong in the captcha box or you will have to fill the whole page again. As for me …well if they can’t do something that simple I couldn’t be bothered going through the fill out process all over again 🙁
Gidday There Lisa
First let me say thanks for visiting my blog and taking the time to leave a comment. Unlike me, in this instance your article is original and you show a great talent for writing about blogs. That also shows from the number of comments on your articles.
I started my blog under a personal name URL but in hindsight I really should have got more involved with social media and looking at other blogs before I chose. The link between URL and keywords in your meta description plus tags and categories on a website or blog are intrinsically bound together.
Together with posts/articles that are keyword rich and in the same or similar genre as the upper structure of your site means search engines find and locate your content much easier. I must sign up with the Google Wheel because I find mind maps pull all this together quite well.
Thank You
Dennis
Dennis:
Thank you so much for the kind words. I appreciate that.
I hope you didn’t have too much trouble with the wonder wheel! I know that URL is important with regards to our keywords, and I missed the boat on that one as well. However, optimizing the rest of my site with the proper keywords…ones I can rank for….has made a world of difference. Having done that, I rank for more than just friendly blogger. 🙂
Stop back anytime
Lisa
