blog titling tips

The World Wide Web is vast and countless websites, blogs and other content sites are being added to it daily. You may ask yourself how you can make your blog different from the rest. It can be a taunting task and at times, overwhelming, but it’s important to understand why blog titles, keywords and other various factors are essential to a blog’s growth, productivity and livelihood.

What Makes a Blog Title Great?

You’ve written the content, added the perfect amount of keywords, and you are ready to hit publish. Before clicking on that button, take one more look at your blog title. Has the content of your blog post changed? Is it in a different direction? Your blog title needs to reflect your post perfectly, or else it will not be received by readers very well. The key concepts of creating a great blog title are keeping it short, adding a significant keyword and using proper punctuation/grammar.

Use these tactics next time you are creating a blog title to ensure that it is understandable, readable and successful:

  1. Add a number– Sounds easy, right? People are interested in blog posts that offer a numbered list. They crave this because it allows them to read the post easily and are able to follow it extremely well. Additionally, search engines love to put numbered list blog posts on the first page of results. Search engines do this so that the user will click on a link much faster. Examples of these types of blog posts could be:
    • Top 5 Household Pets
    • 10 Reasons to Buy a Waffle Maker
    • 4 Tips to Increase Blog Revenue
  2. Use adjectives– Look over those examples again. The first example you see includes the word “top.” Blog titles that have words like top, best, worst and other similar adjectives are insanely popular. Again, it is because people want specified blog posts because they need information now. The internet is a quick source for many, so letting your reader know exactly what they will be reading is beneficial. Here are a few examples:
    • Top 10 Electronic Devices for 2012
    • Best Vacation Spots in Florida
    • Top 5 Worst Restaurants in America
  3. Don’t Forget the 5 Ws – If you pay close attention to the blog title of this post, you will see how it uses this tactic. Think back to your elementary school days and recall the 5 Ws (and of course, H), which are: Who, What, When, Why, Where and How. This is an easy method to use when your creativity just isn’t there or when you would rather make a statement in your blog title. It still intrigues future readers because they will want to know the answer to the question.

The way you title your blog posts will ultimately determine how popular your blog will become. People want information fast and they often skim through posts and articles until they find the information they are looking for. By making these quick and easy changes to your blog titles, you’ll ensure that the titles are kept at a short length and optimized for search engines.
