One Powerful Untapped Opportunity For Linkbuilding

untapped link building

If you are one of the millions 3 or 4 people who read this blog, then you know I am a huge fan of Traffic Generation Cafe.  Recently, Ana wrote a great post about utilizing eBay for link building. Looking further into things, I realized writing a guide on eBay is a virtually untapped opportunity for linkbuilding.

After reading her post, I promptly went over to eBay and created an “About Me” page. Just as she stated, ( I know she thinks I’m not listening,) you are able to add some HTML code into your page and grab a backlink from eBay.

For the purpose of this post, I will presume that you have done this already and if you haven’t, you can find instructions right here. Now let’s find out how to get a link by writing a guide.
What Is An eBay Guide?

eBay has a complete section for people who wish to write reviews on products or write informational guides. This information is seen around the world by people searching for information on a million different topics. How many people?  30,136,728 daily visitors to be exact!

The guides can be written to showcase your knowledge on particular subject matter, not just products listed on eBay. This is where you can benefit.

I read several information guides by searching “internet marketing.” You will see a bunch of stuff come up about websites, domain names, keywords, etc… What I found was that not one single guide included any links or anchor text. For example, this guide  on keywords for domain names. It appears not many people, if any are capitalizing on eBay allowing links.

IMPORTANT:  eBay allows links to eBay pages but not to outside websites. Your “about me” page does allow outside links. Your goal in your guide writing is to include links back to your eBay about me page. Obviously, your page will have your link to your outside blog/website.

Another added benefit which Ana points out, you have the option to include a contact form in your page. Does List building  appeal to you?! The other great piece I discovered was in writing your guide, you are able to use H2/H3 tags!

How To Write A Guide

I have outlined below how you get to the guide writing section of eBay.

Go to eBay.com

The top right of page —> click communities

scroll down page  until you see the  “more community programs” heading

click—> Reviews & Guides

Two options will now be shown to you. Either write a review or write a guide.

click—> write a guide.

That’s it. Now you can write a post about your chosen topic. Include a link back to your about me page and woohoo another backlink. And it’s a dofollow link to boot.

When you finish your guide, you can input tags at the bottom and choose your categories. I have seen several of these guides with 1000’s of views and again, no links! Missed opportunities my friends.

Final Thoughts

While I am just getting into this, I think this is going to be a great test project for me. I know Ana has been looking into how to drive traffic to the eBay about me page, so I know there will be more great information to come.

Knowing there is opportunity out there to include our links and that it is barely being tapped into makes me do the happy dance. You can find more information on writing a guide here.

Let me know if you have any questions about this and how it works out for you. So, what will you write an eBay guide about?

Thanks for visiting me here! Glad you like the name…:)

I agree with you about Google and internal links, but I look at it kind of as a homepage for a blog. The "about me" page I mean.
Most homepages have a ton of links which gives it more authority so maybe I can do the same over there!
    Or…..i could just be crazy!

  • DJ Funky Slick, haha awesome name. Seen you round the blogosphere before, and came over from your guest post at TechnShare (good post btw)
Ana has a great blog, and I remember reading that post about the backlink strategy. Great way to add additional information and how to's to follow up on that idea. Great way to bolster the strength of your about page and subsequent link. Only a certain amount of internal links are looked at by Google though – something to keep in mind.
