I was thrilled with the latest Google PR update. I know, lots of you don’t care about PR anymore, but I do!! And I am not afraid to say so! PR still matters to some people especially in link building. Anyways, this is a post about how I went from a PR 0 to PR 2 in just six months. In my opinion, I am extremely happy with that and proud of the progress.
How I Did It
I don’t have some secret recipe here for you, quite the contrary. Everything I did when I owned The Friendly Blogger was out in the open to everyone. I shared everything I did with you. So, I see no reason for this to be any different. 🙂
Now, I read a lot of blogs. I implement a lot of tips I read from others….something I think too few people do. Many people read but don’t implement. Kind of along the lines of practice what you preach. If you read somewhere that something has worked for someone, why wouldn’t you try it???
I was guilty of the same thing when I first started. I used the Blogger platform and it sat there collecting dust from april 2009 to October 2010. Then one lucky day, I happened upon Ana Hoffman of Traffic Generation Cafe. The greatest thing that ever happened to my blogging career.
This is no a** kissing or brown nosing post either. This is the bottom line truth of how I increased my PR, made money with this blog and eventually sold it for pure profit.
It takes hard work and dedication to build a blog and make it successful. Period. You can’t just whip a blog and expect the world to fall at it’s doorstep. Ana taught me that. Ana taught me A TON. many of you have taught me things along the way and I appreciate all of it. Ana took me under her wing, gently (HAAAAA) guided me and got tough when needed.
So, what did I do? I read everything I could get my hands on that Ana wrote. I subbed her list, I read her posts, I read her guest posts, I asked her a million questions…..and on and on and on.
I can say with 100% certainty if you read Ana’s stuff, you WILL succeed. Look, I had this blog for about a year and a half and never got anywhere. Then in November of 2010, I took Ana’s advice and moved to WordPress and it’s all history from there. I can’t lay out for you step by step what I did every moment, but I can tell you the pivotal posts I read from TGC.
My advice to you though is to read everything you can on Ana’s blog, but in the meantime, let me give you the posts that made me start moving and grooving. Enjoy!!

Well, that should keep you busy for awhile, especially if you IMPLEMENT!! I am not selling you a load of crap here. Ana talks the talk and walks the walk. Look at her blog….it’s PR 4 and mozrank 5. ‘Nuff said!

Hey, I know you…….I thought you were gone. Are you still posting at this (your old)) site?
How the heck are you? Hopefully things have been going well for you.
I’m still clunking around; still somewhat invisible, at least from a ranking standpoint.
I have gained a little traction, but still not quite sure of direction yet.
Hope you are having a great weekend and 4th.
Hi Bill!!!
Yes, I still post here a few times a month and it’s been great!
I am also still working on some other projects which I haven’t lifted off the immense ground yet!!
I hope you have a great 4th as well…..and I see you making all kinds of traction on Twitter! You’re gonna be a ranking rockstar!!
cheers,
Lisa
Congrats on your PR increase. I hope to follow in your footsteps!
Lisa:
What a pleasure it’s been to work side by side of you – I’ve learned just as much, trust me.
As you can imagine, I incredibly appreciate this acknowledgement – honor and privilege are all mine.
Ana
Awe….just all warm and cozy!!! 🙂
Congrats on the success story. Very inspiring. But while appropriate to acknowledge the advice from Ana, ultimately is was your hard work that paid off.
PageRank (PR)R is important for two reasons: 1) it provides a simplistic report on the quality of the external sites linking to yours; and 2) it is probably still utilized as a factor in the depth of indexing of sites.
While PageRank was often over emphasized in the past, the biggest flaw in PageRank is the randomness of the updates. When the reports are fresh, as they are this week, it is a useful reporting data point.
Thank you Randy! And I couldn’t agree more; a frsh update is a good indication of a site’s value. Although people are moving away from this metric, I still like to see the little fairy dust! 🙂
Lisa,
Congrats. This Google update has both made me happy and made me mad. Happy becuase obvious they had a “real” update.
But also mad because I am pretty sure they had to be “throttling” the results in the last update.
Ana’s site is the perfect example. Last update she stayed a 0 PR. Now suddenly she is PR4. Now this didn’t suddenly happen, her PR has been growing for a while.
Ultimately, I do think PR as an important factor is greatly decreasing. I agree it is nice to see.
(I can’t say i am not happy about my PR2 going to PR4)
You’re a genuine rockstar though Steve!! :)))
And yes, I see what you mean about Ana’s site. I still think the last update was about 7 months behind which would mean the same for this one. Idk much about how Google does this whole update thingy, but I sure like it this time.
The only thing I wonder is about mozRank. As they state in the FAQ that they correlate pretty closely with PR, however several sites I have visited, including this one, are about 1 point under in PR….compared to mR.
I think I just like to sound like I know what I’m talking about!
Cheers,
Lisa
